There was little grandness to when I changed my mind. Like many people I saw the well communicated and educative documentary, The True Cost. It was confronting and yet hopeful on how one of the biggest industries in the world was impacting us all. Our environment on one end of the spectrum and the thousands of lives manufacturing together our clothes on the other.
The initial shock of the film faded but what remained was a total 180 in my consumer mind and habits. Yes, I said, let's do this. My enthusiasm, at the time, was complemented by simultaneously changing the way I was eating and exercising (not exercising).
I love clothes and fashion and dressing up. Always have, always will. It's not my ultimate source of happiness but I'm blessed enough to enjoy the benefits of a wardrobe and creating a style for myself.
The combination of getting to invest in something I love and know it's helping and not hindering the world, was a journey worth embarking on. So many companies and brands are committing to the cause and making it the norm. Your basic lifestyle choice of consumption shouldn't be at the cost of another human life or the future deterioration of the planet.
It is certainly not an oversight fix or clean out. And it isn't the individual's battle, but the collective's. Team work makes the dream work, hey? I can't wait for more to come on this. I am planning to bring more articles, blog posts, features and reviews on the ethics and sustainability of the garment industry. I would love for you to join me and follow me on Instagram or visit me back here on The Refresh.
